Bejo Zaden raises seeds of unusual fruit and vegetables

The first thing one sees on the stand of the seed specialist Bejo Zaden B.V. are the miniature vegetables: the romanesco, cauliflower and radiccio heads are only fist-sized. And next to them are the large shallots that have also been bred by this company.

Small vegetables are intended for single households; while cooks prefer tasty shallots to the usual onions, which is why these have been bred to be larger. Hybrid shallots can be grown directly from seed and ripen three times faster that the usual shallots, i.e. within 130 days, says Siem Beers, Area Manager Eastern Europe.

For something more unusual seeds are available for producing white, yellow and purple-red carrots with a high beta carotene content. And coming soon to supermarket shelves: juices from Marwit GmbH, freshly pressed in the evening, delivered overnight and ready for sale in the morning. The fruit used comes from our seeds, says Beer.
