Opening ceremonies of the14th FRUIT LOGISTICA: quality and trust the main themes of the evening

Quality and trust was the link between all the speakers at the 14th opening ceremonies of FRUIT LOGISTICA. Dr. Gerd Müller, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, called upon growers and the trade to show a greater individual responsibility as a means of ensuring supplies of safe fruit and vegetables for consumers in the future.

In Germany 95 per cent of all the produce grown under strictly controlled conditions reaches the market without any complaints.

Stefan Feuerstein, who gave the address, and is a member of the Board of Metro AG, also believes that the main objective of the fresh produce departments of his companys outlets is to win the trust of consumers. Last summer we initiated a project, Food Safety, focussing on the examination and traceability of foodstuffs. Feuerstein welcomed initiatives such as EurepGAP and Germanys QS-GAP, which ensure that only the highest standards are maintained, from the field to the consumers table, and are suitably documented. Karin Schubert, Justice Senator and Mayor of Berlin, is particularly pleased about the growing international dimension of FRUIT LOGISTICA.

Now most of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are present here. This illustrates the high standing enjoyed by this fair in promoting the exchange of contacts in Europe. She also emphasised that the quality and safety of food are currently a particularly important aspect. I am delighted that so many exhibitors are using this fair in order to create a greater sense of trust among consumers. Dr. Christian Gke, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin, borrowed the slogan of this years World Cup for the FRUIT LOGISTICA, a time to make friends, pointing out that the fair, with its 1,600 exhibitors from 64 countries, is truly a world championship for the fruit and vegetable trade. And this is supported by the enthusiasm of the German public, each of whom consumes what might well be a record-breaking 204.5 kilograms of fresh and processed vegetables annually.
