Trilogue negotiations have now concluded pending the final approval of the legal texts by the European Parliament and the Council. LIFE funding will focus on protecting the environment, providing support for nature and biodiversity, and climate change adaptation and mitigation action. The programme will support the implementation of the European Green Deal, enabling the EU to become climate-neutral by 2050. Welcoming the agreement Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: “LIFE is a unique European environment program and I am pleased with the agreement reached. By continuing to support concrete climate and biodiversity action, LIFE will help to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal." Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginius Sinkevičius added: "This agreement on the LIFE programme is an additional step towards a safer and better future for our planet. With more funding, we can increase our support for the protection of the environment, speed up the transition to a circular economy and reduce our footprint on nature and biodiversity".
The LIFE programme is among the EU funding programmes for which the Commission has proposed the largest proportional increase for the period 2021-2027.
More information on the LIFE programme is available online.
