Bulgarian Presidency conclusions on future CAP welcome news

Copa and Cogeca welcomed today the adoption by the Bulgarian Presidency of conclusions on the future of food and farming.
Cogeca President Thomas Magnusson said “The conclusions which were backed by many EU Farm Ministers support many of our demands, especially those which underline that the new delivery model must bring a real simplification for farmers. Simplification is a number one priority for us”.

In a meeting with the Bulgarian Presidency, he stressed “The Commission’s plan on the future of food and farming is a good starting point for us. The focus on smart farming is very positive as it can improve the competitiveness of the sector and enable farmers to produce more using less resources. But both the new delivery model and the new green architecture still need further clarification. Guarantees are needed to ensure that the CAP truly remains a common policy without any renationalisation and that it is backed by a strong budget”.

The conclusions also underline the importance of maintaining direct payments to farmers as key to income support and risk management which Copa and Cogeca welcome. “Targeted support which goes to genuine, active farmers is underlined too which is a priority for Copa and Cogeca”, Magnusson concluded.
