Copa and Cogeca react to MEPs vote on EU biofuel plans
Copa and Cogeca welcome as a step in the right direction European Parliament’s vote on the EU Commission proposal on the promotion of renewable energy sources (RES), but warn that it is not ambitious enough.

Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “It is good news that MEPs agreed today to fix the maximum share of crop-based biofuels in transport fuel at 7% by 2030. But with at least 80% of new vehicles expected to have an internal combustion engine, MEPs move to raise the share of renewable energy sources in the renewable energy mix in transport to a total of 12% is not realistic. A blending obligation on fuel suppliers excluding crop-based biofuels that are certified as sustainable from the liquid fuel mix in 2030 would threaten the EU renewable energy and climate goals. It will also not instill confidence in investors in advanced biofuels”, Pesonen stressed. “Only fossil fuels, which are less environmentally-friendly, would gain”, he explained. “We nevertheless welcome the fact that the importance of forests and their role in tackling climate change has been recognised by MEPs”, added Pesonen.
“We urge MEPs, Commisssion and Council to find an acceptable solution for agricultural biomass during the upcoming trialogue negotiations”, Pesonen concluded.
