EU plans to cut biofuel use will not meet climate goals

Ahead of EU Transport and Energy Ministers meeting, Copa and Cogeca urges the Estonian Presidency not to cut the target for crop-based biofuels used in transport by 2030.

In a letter sent to Estonian Minister for Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kadri Simson, Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen explained that EU transport will not be sustainable without liquid biofuels post-2020. The plan to cut the share of crop-based biofuels in transport fuel from 7% in 2021 to 3.8% by 2030 would also prevent the EU from meeting its climate goals and from de-carbonizing the transport sector,” Pesonen stressed.  “They would be replaced by fossil fuels, which emit more greenhouse gases,” he added.

Biofuels give farmers another outlet for their cereals, rapeseed and sugar beet crops which is important given the agricultural surpluses on the market. Copa and Cogeca urge the EU to keep the maximum share of crop-based biofuels at 7% until 2030.
