Copa and Cogeca underline need for effective and simple greening measures

Reacting to the EU Court of Auditors report today on greening measures under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), Copa and Cogeca underlined that effective and simple “greening measures” under the CAP are vital to ensure that farmers are paid for the good work that they do. This is important as the market does not reimburse farmers for the public and the environmental services that they provide.

Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “It is important to simplify the greening measures under the future CAP as farmers have been overburdened by bureaucracy. In the EU in 2016, 77% of the agricultural area was subject to one or more greening obligations. To achieve results, the greening measures have to be more effective and easier to work with so that farmers can deliver. A science based approach that combines international climate and environmental ambitions but also takes into account the impact of trade agreements and recognises the EU’s high production standards could contribute here”.

“For farmers and their cooperatives, sustainability in its three dimensions – economic, environmental and social – is a key priority for the future CAP. We would like to see the greening measures significantly simplified and improved to provide a long-term continuous tool for farmers to contribute to food production and environmental protection”, he concluded.
