COCERAL disappointed and highly concerned with no-decision on glyphosate

COCERAL regrets that no decision has been made during today’s Standing Committee meeting on the European Commission proposal to re-authorise glyphosate.

COCERAL calls for a 15 years authorisation for a product deemed safe by both the European Food Safety Authority and the European Chemicals Agency.

Secretary General Teresa Babuscio said "The deadlock on glyphosate undermines the credibility of EU institutions and independent scientific bodies. Questioning the full re-authorisation of glyphosate and disregarding the robust scientific evidence behind its safety would set a dangerous precedent threatening science-based policy decisions in the EU."
She added "Trust in science is essential. The current political bargaining on glyphosate re-authorisation by decision-makers ignoring conclusions of their own scientific agencies is deplorable and benefits no one."

COCERAL urges the European Commission and Member States to take their responsibilities, follow EU legislation and scientific agencies conclusions, and re-authorise glyphosate for 15 years.
Plant Protection Products are critical tools for farmers to secure sustainable yields in agricultural production in Europe and to manage quality and safety risks for their crops.
COCERAL is seriously concerned that a failure to re-authorise glyphosate would have a significant impact on trade and would seriously jeopardise the supply of grains and oilseeds to the European Union.
