Social media star is heading for Agritechnica 2017

Among the hundreds of thousands visitors to Agritechnica this year will be Derek Klingenberg, who is better known to his Twitter and YouTube followers as Farmer Derek. He will make the 8000km journey from his home in Kansas, United States, to Hanover, Germany, for the world’s largest farm machinery trade fair.

Klingenberg, who farms with his father and brothers near the town of Peabody, about 250km west of Kansas City, has 70,000 YouTube subscribers and has seen several of this videos go viral. An August 2014 film of him serenading cattle with his trombone (https://youtu.be/qs_-emj1qR4) has been watched by more than 10.5 million people, while his August 2013 production “What does the farmer say” – like several of his videos, a parody of a hit pop song – has had nearly seven million views.

“YouTube attracted my attention when it launched, and I have been uploading videos since 2008,” says Klingenberg. “I use other platforms too, but YouTube is my focus.

“It’s a way of promoting the agricultural sector. I can’t put a figure on how much it has helped our farm and the farming industry, but I know it has made a difference. I also know it’s not enough; this industry could do much more to engage with consumers.”

The Klingenberg family grows wheat, corn, soybeans, and hay. And they also graze cattle during the spring and summer before they go to the feed yards of Western Kansas for finishing. Meanwhile, the number of views that Derek Klingenberg gets for his videos means that producing them can also be a profitable farm enterprise.

“It is very much like farming – it is variable,” he says. “Yes, the big videos are profitable, but I have many videos that are not.”

This will be Klingenberg’s first visit to Agritechnica, and he admits he doesn’t know what to expect.

“I honestly have no idea,” he says. “I am very excited, and I will probably be in shock most of the time.”

Agritechnica 2017 will take place from the 12 to 18 November (special preview days on 12 and 13 November) at Hanover’s exhibition grounds. More than 2,800 exhibitors have registered from 53 countries worldwide.
