Agrifirm introduces TopCote potato: innovative fertiliser granule mix for maximum yield

Agrifirm introduces TopCote potato, an innovative fertiliser for propagating material and ware potatoes. TopCote[1] features a unique composition of coated and uncoated fertiliser granules. The phased release of minerals and nutrients means the needs of the potato crop are optimally supported throughout the growing season.

The use of TopCote potato is effective compared to regular fertilisers and yields a demonstrably better crop result. TopCote potato was presented during PotatoEurope and will be available from December 2017.

“Our composition of coated and uncoated fertiliser granules is unique. In recent years we have been thoroughly testing the TopCote mix on both test fields and on the actual farms of our members. We are deeply proud of the results: even on sandy soils within the current nitrogen standards, the combination of TopCote potato and a minimum amount of additional fertiliser produced considerably better yields than with the application of existing fertilisers”, according to Karin Oonk-Nooren, Fertiliser Knowledge Coordinator at Agrifirm Plant.

Less spreading for maximum yield
Thanks to the combination of coated and uncoated granules, TopCote supplies the necessary nutrition immediately after application. The coated granules go on to provide a sustained effect. If there is sufficient moisture, nutrients in the coated granules dissolve and are released into the soil in a controlled way. This process is also temperature dependent: the warmer it is, the quicker the nutrients are released. The speed of this process depends on the coating chosen. This means that the supply of elements can at all times be perfectly synchronised with the requirements of the crop.

“TopCote fertilisers regulate the release and limit the salt content in the soil; provided the nutrients are in the granule, they cannot contribute to the soil’s EC level. All this results in a stable growing process and consequently a better yield. In addition, TopCote’s sustained-release action means fewer spreading sessions and at least one less round of additional fertiliser are required”, explains Oonk-Nooren.

Customisation

TopCote is specifically adapted to the crop and soil type. The mix for propagating material contains nitrogen and magnesium and provides the crop with a basic dosage between planting and ridging that supports it throughout the growing season. With ware potatoes, TopCote potato is specifically blended for crops in lighter, sandy soils in the South-East Netherlands. This mix supplements the nitrogen application from animal manure and ensures sustained nitrogen supply throughout the growing season. After application of TopCote the crop will only need to be fertilised once using an NK mix.

Product introduction during PotatoEurope 2017
The introduction of TopCote potato will take place at PotatoEurope in Emmeloord. “We are looking forward to introducing our members and other growers to TopCote during PotatoEurope 2017. We are convinced that with TopCote, we will be able to make a difference for growers and contribute to the perfect growth of their potato crop and a successful yield”, claims Oonk-Nooren.

This development will contribute to realising Agrifirm’s vision in generating profitable, high-impact and sustainable value on the farm.
