Copa and Cogeca welcome EU Court ruling banning products labelled as soya “milk” or tofu “butter”

Signaling good news for livestock farmers and their cooperatives, Copa and Cogeca welcomed in Brussels today the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling to stop food companies who sell products labelled “soya milk” or “tofu butter” from being labelled as “milk” or “butter”.

Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “The main aim is to provide consumers with information about their food and make sales descriptions more transparent in order to avoid misleading practices. This ruling confirms the need to continue looking into this matter in order to avoid the use of misleading names for products that do not, for instance, come from animals. The issue is not about having plant-based, innovative produce on the market, it is about ensuring that consumers are not misled or confused vis a vis the differences with livestock produce. Dairy produce, for example, is packed with calcium and and a wide range of essential nutrients which is particularly essential for children and the elderly. It is misleading for consumers to see products like soya “milk” and “tofu butter” being described as “milk” and “butter” replacers when we are talking about different products that have different nutritional benefits”.

“We welcome this ruling from the Court of Justice as a step in the right direction towards complying with EU legislation”, he added.
