Hogan travels to the United States and leads a delegation of EU agri-food producers to Canada

From today, 27 April, to 3 May Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, will be on a working visit first to the United States and then to Canada where he will be accompanied by a business delegation comprising over 60 agri-food representatives from 23 Member States. This trip is part of the Commission's support to European producers in their effort to find new markets.

The visit to Canada happens after the successful completion of the EU-Canada trade deal (CETA) that creates new opportunities for European agri-food producers and will boost trade exchanges with this key partner. Ahead of his departure, Commissioner Hogan said: “The quality and tradition of our European food and drink products is a major strength in today's global marketplace. We are confident that CETA will bring more European products to discerning Canadian consumers. Europe will be able to export nearly 92% of its agricultural and food products to Canada duty-free. More than half a billion people on both sides of the Atlantic will enjoy new opportunities, and European products with protected geographical indications will receive special status on the Canadian market." While in Canada, Commissioner Hogan will meet the Canadian Minister of Agriculture Mr Lawrence MacAulay. Together with the business delegation, Commissioner Hogan will also attend the official opening of the SIAL Canada 2017international food fair in Toronto, where the EU has been named asregion of honourthis year. Several other meetings with local retailers and food producers will take place to establish long-lasting business contacts for the accompanying producers.

More information on the Canadian business mission as well as the full programme is available here. On his way to Canada, the Commissioner will stop in the United States where he will participate in a series of meetings with Members of Congress on Capitol Hill and stakeholders, from among others, the World Bank, the American Farm Bureau Federation and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
