Internet of Things in the European and Flemish agriculture and food sector

As one of the leading partners in the European H2020 project “Internet of Food and Farm 2020” (IoF2020), ILVO contributes to the large-scale introduction of Internet of Things (IoT) in the European and Flemish agriculture and food sector. In this way, the transformation of agriculture and food into smart networks of connected objects has also begun in Flanders.

Internet of Food and FarmThe Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to transform the agriculture and food industry by enrolling large smart networks of connected objects that can be identified, monitored and controlled remotely. IoT can for example be used to optimize meat quality while reducing the possibilities for fraud to a minimum via transparency and traceability. Another example is in potato cultivation, where IoT sensors can continuously generate data used for monitoring the state of the soil, the plant and the climate. This supports better predictions and management decisions.

The Internet of Things, applied on a large scale within the project IoF2020, will be validated in real-life situations in different areas of food and agriculture. In total, 19 use cases (in which end-users, technology providers and research institutes will cooperate to attain particular goals) will be tested in 5 sectors (arable, dairy, fruit, vegetables and meat). During the project new technologies and use cases will be funded through an open call.
ILVO will coordinate two use cases, one on tracking cows on pasture together with Sensolus and INAGRO, and one on optimizing pig farm management together with Porphyrio, VION (NL), ZLTO (NL) and ISMB (IT).
