European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2016

On European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2016, Copa & Cogeca underlined its commitment to ensure that all veterinary medicines, including antibiotics, are used responsibly in farm animals.

Speaking in Brussels, Copa & Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “Under the one-health approach, everyone must play their role in controlling and reducing antimicrobial resistance in Europe. EU farmers are making strong efforts to ensure the responsible  use of veterinary medicines including antibiotics. We believe that prevention is better than cure.

In addition, as founder members of the European Platform for Responsible Use of Medicines in Animals (EPRUMA), we believe that antibiotics should be used “as little as possible, and as much as necessary”. We should also not forget that the discussion on antibiotics has a strong link with animal health and welfare, as in some places or for some species, there is sometimes no choice but to use them.”

“Recent reports show that there has been a decline in sales of antimicrobials for food producing animals over the period 2011-2014. This confirms that EU farmers are making every effort to reduce their use and we will continue to encourage this” he added.
