More than 65,000 trade visitors from over 135 countries will have a chance to vote for the Innovation of the Year on 3-4 February 2016. The FLIA honours outstanding new products and services in the fresh produce industry that have set important new trends in the marketplace. The ten innovations will be presented at FRUIT LOGISTICA 2016 in a special display located between Halls 20 and 21. This is where the winner will be announced on 5 February 2016 at 14:30.

Automato is a POS “vending machine” with three boxes that dispense different cherry tomato varieties into paper bags. Each box has its own hopper and can be operated separately. Consumers can choose one or more varieties – in one colour or a mix of red, orange and yellow. The Automato is hygienic and interesting for the youngest shoppers – it also attracts their interest in new vegetable varieties. Each box measures 23.5 x 51 x 50 cm. The total size, including all three boxes and a holder for the paper bags, measures is 70 x 130 x 75 cm.

Green lettuce can now be grown automatically with the Mobile Gully system and also harvested and packed by this new machine. The plants are automatically lifted out of the seed rail and then cut. Depending on the degree of automation, the heads can also be packed directly into crates. Tomatoes and other glasshouse vegetables have long been produced using hydro-culture. With this breakthrough technology, similar methods are now available for leafy vegetables. In response to increasing demand, hydro-culture production is now being expanded and prices are coming under pressure. Automation not only for sowing and cultivation, but also for harvesting and packaging, can help absorb some of the production costs.

The Kitchen Minis®-Tomato is a small, compact and visually attractive cherry tomato plant for the domestic window sill. It is capable of producing up to 150 fruit throughout the year. One of the special features is the particularly small size of the plant: 9 to 11 cm wide and 35 cm high. The tomatoes weigh 8 to 10 grams each and have a Brix value between six and seven. Sweet tasting and aromatic, the Kitchen Minis®-Tomato can encourage children and younger consumers to eat more vegetables. At the same time, they learn about fruit growing and can trace the development of the plant from flower to green tomato and ripened fruit.

The Outspan Sam campaign shows children how fruit is grown, all the way from the plantation to the point of sale. In four different videos, the path of the fruit is traced in all its different stages: from the seedling in the plantation, through harvesting, packing, transport and sale in the supermarket, to the kitchen table. Outspan Sam, a character specially developed for this campaign, narrates the story. Video clips can be accessed by scanning a QR Code. The aim of the campaign is to promote knowledge and understanding among young, next-generation consumers and increase appreciation for healthy, fresh produce.

Parmentine's Cup is a plastic container with 250 grams of baby potatoes for cooking in the microwave. They are packed together with 25 grams of basil-tomato or chive-quark sauce. The potatoes are pre-washed and ready to eat. The containers are easy and safe to transport and can be prepared quickly and easily in the office or at home. Six minutes in the microwave and consumers have a healthy and tasty, low-fat meal. The yellow-fleshed potatoes have less than 90 calories per 100 grams, the basil-tomato sauce only 20 calories, and the chive-quark sauce around 70 calories.
