Copa Cogeca welcome EP Environment Committee opposition to EC proposal on GM food and feed

Copa and Cogeca welcomed today European Parliament Environment Committees’ outright rejection of the EU Commission proposal which lets member states decide whether or not to authorise the use of genetically modified food or feed in their countries.

Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “This a very welcome move. The Commissions proposal amounts to renationalisation and if it had gone through, competition would have been distorted in the internal market. It would also threaten livestock farmers livelihoods who rely on imports of feed”.

The report drawn up by MEP Giovanni La Via was adopted by a large majority of 47 votes to 3 and 5 abstentions. The next step is a vote by the full set of MEPs at plenary session on October 28. “And I hope that they will put their full weight behind both the Environment and Agriculture Committees opposition to the plans”, he added.
