24 EU rural development programmes but call for remaining 67 programmes to be approved

Copa and Cogeca welcomed today approval by the EU Commission of a further 24 Rural Development Programmes designed to improve the competitiveness of the EU farming sector, caring for the countryside and climate, and strengthening the economic and social fabric of rural communities until 2020, and urge for the remaining programmes to be adopted.

The programmes adopted this week are expected to create over 40 000 jobs in rural areas and about 700 000 training places to foster innovation, knowledge transfer, more sustainable farming practices and stronger rural businesses.

But Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen also underlined that 67 programmes out of the 118 still remain to be approved and we urge them to be adopted. Their contribution to growth and jobs in EU rural areas and to climate and environmental goals is vital. Measures relating to  investment aid and support to help young farmers set up are crucial to the sector. Support is important to ensure a viable EU farming and forestry sector and to guarantee generational renewal. We urge the Commission to accelerate adoption of the programmes  without affecting the quality and objectives of the programmes
