New EFSA Pesticides Residues Report confirms Europes’ Food is Safe

A new report released by the EU Food Safety Authority (EFSA) today confirms that European farmers and agri-cooperatives provide amongst the safest food in the world.
The report confirms that over 97% of food samples evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) contain pesticide residue levels that fall within legal limits, and are therefore completely safe to eat. Just under 55% of samples are also free of any detectable traces of these chemicals.

The findings are part of EFSA’s 2013 annual report on pesticide residues in food, which includes the results for almost 81,000 food samples from 27 EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. The same report reveals that a higher level of residues exceeding the Maximal Residue Levels (MRL) were found in products imported to the EU from non-EU countries.

Commenting on the findings, Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen said “I welcome these results which confirm that farmers and agri-cooperatives are continuing to do an excellent job in providing quality, safe food supplies to European consumers. Plant protection products are a good tool to enable farmers to grow healthy crops which are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. It is in their interests to ensure they provide safe, good quality and sustainable food supplies for over 500 million European consumers”.
