CEJA hails Presidency text on Young Farmers as major step forward
CEJA strongly welcomes the proposals put forward by the Italian Presidency at today’s Agriculture Council meeting on the subject of ‘Strengthening EU policies to support young farmers’. The barriers to access a career in farming, most importantly lack of access to land and credit, are also the barriers that stand in the way of a more innovative and sustainable European agricultural sector.

As stated in the Presidency’s document, despite the important measures dedicated to young farmers in the new CAP, it is clear that these alone do not offer enough concrete support or incentive to help ambitious, qualified and business-minded young people to set up an agricultural business.
In this context, the proposals outlined by the Italian Presidency text, such as the European Investment Bank guarantee to help young farmers access credit from their national banks and concrete measures which address the problematic issue of access to land, could unlock the untapped potential of young farmers who are attempting to establish themselves successfully in the sector.
CEJA President Matteo Bartolini strongly approved of the Presidency text, saying: “I am delighted to see that EU agriculture Ministers have heard the calls of young people and understood the importance of concrete and practical tools in the current context. These are essential in order to support jobs and growth in agriculture and therefore make it an even more innovative and competitive sector by injecting more youth into the European farming population.”
