The move came at Copa-Cogecas Cereal-Oilseeds Working Party. At the meeting, Members indicated a good EU harvest this year, reaching 317.7 million tonnes, partly as a result of more favourable weather conditions in the EU-28 this year. But some warned that the quality is down in their countries.

Speaking at the meeting, Copa-Cogeca Chairman of the Working Party Max Schulman from Finland highlighted the need to have good infrastructures across the EU in order to transport the large volumes of grain and to store it properly. “We need to examine whether they are adequate and what improvements can be made”, he said. “We also need to ensure farmers have a good tool box at their disposal, like disease resistant plants, new and better varieties, research and development, good plant protection products. The phasing out of pesticides is hitting the sector badly which is particularly serious when we need to increase production to meet growing world food demand set to rise by 60% by 2050,” he added.

Finally, with grain prices declining as a result of the increased supplies, Mr Schulman underlined the need for farmers to have robust financial tools at their disposal to help them hedge against price risks.  The Single Payment must also be paid on time in order not weaken producers cash flow further”, he stressed.
