China to rely more on feed ingredient imports

China will be increasingly dependent on animal feed ingredients in international markets in the next decade to serve its growing demand for meat, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation & Development (OECD) and the Food & Agriculture Organisation.

In a joint report both organisations said imports of soybeans, a key protein source in pig and poultry feeds, will total 83 million tonnes in 2022, a 40% increase from 2013. Imports of coarse grain, mostly corn, will be 13.2 million tonnes in 2022. “The historic economic and social transformation of China will continue to have huge implication for international agricultural markets. China, holds one-fifth of the world’s population, is endowed with little arable land and water supplies relative to its population base,” the report indicated.
