Belgians eating less meat

Belgians are eating less and less meat. Research commissioned by the Flemish Centre for Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing, the VLAM, shows that meat consumption fell by a further 3.6% last year.

The average Belgian is now only eating 30.4 kilos of meat a year and the figure includes poultry, rabbit and game.

Mixed meats remain the mainstay of Belgians' meat diet. For the first time in years this category made no headway at all last year.

Pork remains the most consumed single variety of meat followed by chicken, beef, veal and lamb. Lamb and turkey are still growing their share, but only represent a small market segment.

Belgians still eat more meat (87%) than fish (12%).

Our fellow countrymen prefer fresh meat to frozen meat. Over 95% of the meat purchased in Belgium is fresh meat.

The survey is based on research among 5,000 households.
