Agritechnica 2011 - direct cut ‘Marangon for New Holland’

The importance of biomass within the agricultural sector is of growing importance, and it is a fundamental pillar of New Holland’s Clean Energy Leader Strategy. In order to meet the growing demand for direct cut whole crop and grass operations, FR9000, forage harvester customers will now be able to choose the ‘Marangon for New Holland’ direct cut header. Hedley Cooper, Head of Harvester Product Management stated, “The ‘Marangon for New Holland’ header will become the default choice for intensive biomass operations that are looking for superlative performance from direct cut headers that offer outstanding crop to crop flexibility”.

Biomass: a fundamental pillar of the Clean Energy Leader Strategy

Biomass is at the heart of New Holland’s Clean Energy Leader strategy, as it could be considered as the ultimate renewable energy source. The never-ending cycle of sowing, growing and harvesting will exist as long as farmers and contractors continue to cultivate the land. Biomass offers farmers the opportunity to provide for their own energy needs, and to sell any surplus back to the national grid for improved profitability.

New Holland provides a complete range of equipment to grow, harvest and process biomass crops. The FR9000 range of self-propelled forage harvesters is at the centre of this strategy, with specifically developed, super fine chop biomass drums and a full range of fully compatible headers, including maize, coppice and direct cut variants.

Biomass in Europe: fast-expanding segment with rapid growth in direct cut operations

Biomass is of growing importance in Europe: by 2020, it is expected that 8600 MW of electricity will be generated from over 2.5 million hectares of carbon neutral biomass crops. Direct cut headers represent a 12% market share today, a figure which is expected to grow to up to 25% by 2015.

‘Marangon for New Holland’ direct cut header: superior performance and outstanding reliability

The ‘Marangon for New Holland’ header is set to significantly improve the productivity of direct cut whole crop and grass biomass operations as well as for super intensive dairy farms that predominately feed grass silage. The six metre header offers a super fine cut with 14 cutting discs.

The exclusive super flat round discs ensure a smooth, uninterrupted crop flow, which transmits zero stress and strain to the cutting bed, enhancing machine reliability and reducing costly down time during tight cutting windows. Furthermore, a highly efficient drive mechanism indirectly drives each individual disc gear for significantly reduced parasitic losses and increased reliability.

The large diameter auger quickly feeds the crop into machine to complete this highly efficient package.

The main frame is composed of one module to which the cutterbar has been fully welded for increased strength and inherent stability. The flip-up cover enables super-fast cutterbar inspection, and rapid drive module maintenance can also be carried out without opening the cutterbar. Moreover, when cutting tall, high value whole crop, it can be elevated via hydraulic struts to prevent knocking off valuable seeds.
