Open Days Clause and Nickerson-Zwaan

From September 27th to September 30th, vegetable professionals can get acquainted with the latest range of open field vegetable varieties offered by vegetable seed companies Nickerson-Zwaan, Clause and Vilmorin. The International Open Days are one of the biggest promotional events of the year, and are a real “living catalogue” of many crops and varieties for an audience that is becoming more and more international. The event will be organised on a field located near Dirkshorn (province of North Holland in The Netherlands).

The three seed companies again join their forces to show a very complete range of crops, with new varieties on show in for example white cabbage, onion, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, squash, leek, radish, beans and chicory witloof. Visitors will also find our successful varieties of headed cabbage (red, savoy, pointed), Brussels sprouts, beetroot, celery, celeriac, endive, pumpkin, fennel and sweet corn. Fruited crops (tomato, cucumber a.o.) will be shown in the (enlarged) pavilion. The demo field is designed to inform customers from all over Europe and outside Europe about the latest trends and technologies in vegetable growing. A personal approach of visitors is guaranteed, including good possibilities to discuss with our vegetable specialists.

Nickerson-Zwaan is continuing its worldwide growth strategy in Brassica (cabbage). Especially in white cabbage for fresh market and industry many new numbers are shown from the early to late segments and for North West Europe as well as Export markets. Examples of interesting innovations are NiZ 17-850 F1, which is a new faster growing variant of Mozart/Castello F1,
NiZ 17-1087 F1, a variety that keeps its fresh look even after long storage, and several new varieties in the middle and late segments (80 - 100 growing days) with well adapted disease resistances and tolerances for home and export markets (example NiZ 17-1043 F1).
Cauliflower is also presented for different markets including export, for example our new Chamonix F1 that is strong against tipburn and suitable for cropping from hot to cold conditions, a feature that is very appreciated in for example the Midddle East region.
In the industry segment the tremendous success of Seoul F1 will be further enhanced by the new NiZ 10-417 F1 for the autumn slot producing very heavy and dense curds.

Novelty in the demo field is a large range of Extra Long Day and Long Day onions. In the past years Nickerson-Zwaan has invested heavily in the extension of its onion range, and recently big investments have been realised in our onion breeding facilities in Rilland (NL). Big hits in North West Europe are Centro F1 and Dormo F1 with their strong combination of very high yield, earliness, very long storage and firmness. Of course Downy mildew resistant variety Santero F1 is presented.

A novelty to discover is high yielding long storage red onion Retano F1, and the range of set onions is interesting. In the Long Day range, visitors should have a look at Valentino F1, Nickerson-Zwaan’s first full Spanish variety introduced in Europe for fresh market and industry (dual purpose).

This is the second year we show radish in the field, a crop in which Nickerson-Zwaan runs a large breeding programme. Big highlight is Diego F1 that is showing excellent results worldwide. Whitella F1 is the first hybrid round white radish. In leek, Capito F1 has proven to be a real winner in Western and Eastern Europe thanks to its extreme high uniformity, very high net yields, very easy peeling (labour saving) combined with Pseudomonas resistance.

Sister company Vilmorin is investing energetically in lettuce breeding, and is now proud to present a whole new range of Iceberg lettuce featuring up-to-date resistance to Bremia (1-28) and including varieties adapted for North West Europe. As usual we present a full lettuce range, highlighting babyleaf, red oak and “triple red” lollo rossa  for all segments from early to late.
Novelty on the field is chicory witloof, a real Vilmorin specialty. A new improved generation is presented, characterised by high uniformity and quality of the roots as well as of the final product, for example the latest Flexine F1.
In carrot Vilmorin introduces a new type of Maestro carrot, named Extremo F1, that is very strong against breaking. The brand also shows its full range of haricot beans for fresh market and processing industry, ranging from extra fine to mid-fine including three new varieties in the mid-fine segment, MV 0640, MV 10242 and 7112. Of course the new red beet Redval F1 featuring Rhizomania resistance holds a prominent place.

Clause shows a wide range of 25 different crops. Carrot is Clause’s main highlight this year. On the field visitors can evaluate a large range of modern hybrids, featuring more smoothness in combination with good storage characteristics, for heavier soil types and for cold storage. Visitors will also be interested by the new range for processing industry and by varieties for bunching carrot. In the field, varieties like Hermes F1, Match F1 and Brutus F1 (Nantes type), Gema F1 (Berlicum type) and Triton F1 (bunched and baby carrot) can be judged at different sowing densities.

Recently introduced very early broccoli varieties Sirtaki F1 and Koros F1 can be compared with other varieties. Both varieties enable growers 1 week earlier harvesting, generating more value.
The field also shows the summer varieties Kuba F1, Ketchua F1 and Kanga F1.
Clause has a dominant market position in cauliflower for industry and fresh market. A couple of new introductions for fresh market will be shown, like Clipper F1 (early).

Squash growers should absolutely get acquainted with the new virus resistant variety Eva F1. Pumpkins for decoration or for Halloween, and edible pumpkins for cuisine or industrial processing fit well into the season. New Celeriac hybrids offering good bolting resistance and more yield to growers certainly deserve attention, and bean producing companies will be pleased to discover the new bean range for Europe.

This season, cabbage growers will have sufficient seed supply of Squadron F1, the long storage variety featuring high thrips tolerance and a nice green colour after storage. Worth to mention are also a very wide range of endive and frisée endive varieties with high bolting resistance, various types of lettuce, hybrid turnips, green celery, (baby)fennel and more. In the pavilion, where food and drinks will be readily available, all visitors can judge the latest corn salad varieties.
