EuroTier 2010: World's top event for animal production

EuroTier 2010: World's top event for animal production

Dr. Reinhard Grandke, Chief Executive Officer of DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft - German Agricultural Society), Frankfurt am Main

The DLG (German Agricultural Society), organiser of the world's largest exhibition for animal production, EuroTier, reports outstanding exhibitor participation figures this year. With 1,939 direct exhibitors and 28 additionally represented companies from altogether 49 different countries, figures are around eight percent higher than the previous record level. On an exhibition area of almost 18 hectares (a plus of two percent), the exhibitors are presenting modern, innovative and professional concepts for agricultural animal husbandry. The leading manufacturers in the industry are represented in Hanover. In addition, advisors and consultants from many international associations and organisations as well as research institutions, academia and DLG with its experts are offering comprehensive opportunities for gathering information. With this impressive exhibition programme, unique in its completeness, EuroTier is the world's top event of its kind and at the same time the indispensable forum for the future of professional animal production.

World meeting place for the industry – EuroTier, more international than ever before
Altogether 778 direct exhibitors and 23 additionally represented firms come from outside Germany. This represents a further increase of five percent by comparison with the previous record international participation. The largest contingents of international exhibitors come from the Netherlands (147), France (92), Italy (59), Denmark (56), the United Kingdom (52), China (52), Belgium (48), Austria (42) and Spain (42). Accordingly around 40 percent of the exhibitors come from outside Germany. This international participation reflects the unbroken high level of interest in Germany as exhibition venue for systems, machinery and equipment in livestock husbandry. This interest is not only driven by the large domestic market in Germany – it is also a consequence of the strong attraction exerted by EuroTier on leading farm managers and the growing markets in Central and Eastern Europe and on experts in the Near and Middle East and China. The exhibitor figures underscore EuroTier's leading position as the turntable to international markets. It is the world forum for the entire industry.

Animal farmers need modern installations, equipment and genetics
It is becoming increasingly clear that all actors in the agricultural sector will need to adapt to more volatile markets in future. At the same time, a growing world population and changes in eating habits as well as the demand for biomass to generate power in large parts of the world are strong medium and long-term arguments indicating a further increase in demand for food. This represents good conditions for animal farmers, both in Germany and worldwide. However, competition for market shares will become keener among producers. And the major challenge in this competition for animal producers worldwide will consist above all in achieving successful sustainable production, even in turbulent frameworks with volatile farm input and producer prices, currency fluctuations and uncertain availability of capital. That is why farmers must manage their farms professionally keeping the future in mind. Their need for information and orientation is high. They require informative and competent guiding assistance, especially regarding questions of management, quality assurance, husbandry in line with animal welfare and appropriate functionality, herd management, feeding, animal health, hygiene and genetics. The Specials at the exhibition, focusing on the fertility of dairy cattle and group housing of sows, as well as the presentation of daughter animals at the TopTierTreff – top cattle genetics, cater to these needs too. EuroTier is thus the ideal information platform. This is where farmers can compare, discuss, select and so create the perspectives for selecting the right course for their future. With the extensive range of information from exhibitors and the many events in the technical programme, including many in different languages, EuroTier will provide answers to the key questions concerning modern animal production.

bpt Congress coincides with EuroTier again
Following the successful premiere in 2008, bpt – the German Federal Association of Practising Veterinarians – is once again holding its annual Congress and associated VET Exhibition at the Exhibition Grounds in Hanover to overlap with EuroTier in 2010. The International Animal Health Event organised jointly by DLG and bpt starting at 18.30 h on Thursday, 18 November, will once again serve veterinarians from all over the world as forum and contact making platform, as well as a link between EuroTier and the bpt Congress. This close interlinkage between EuroTier and the bpt Congress also reflects today's excellent cooperation between farmers and veterinarians and is a clear indication that animal health and hence animal welfare are indispensable elements of professional animal husbandry.

BioEnergy Decentral
The BioEnergy Decentral exhibition prepared together with VDMA Power Systems and the support of the VKU, the association of municipal utilities, is being held at EuroTier. The entire spectrum of technological developments in the field of bioenergy, renewable energies, and systems and installations connected with decentralized energy supply are being presented here. More than 550 exhibitors from 20 different countries are showing their new and further developments. In addition, the Specials "Energy from wood chips" and "Biogas from sugar beet" in the open-air section of the exhibition are exploring two interesting topics in greater detail. As a global forum for decentralized energy supply, BioEnergy Decentral brings the various segments and partners in the market together. At the BioEnergy Evening starting at 18.30 h on 17 November, Karsten Schwanke, familiar to viewers of Germany’s ZDF television channel programme "Abenteuer Wissen" (adventure of knowledge) will discuss the role of bioenergy in society today and in the future. His presentation is entitled "From campfire to anti-matter power station – the future of our energy production" and will highlight the future significance of decentralized energy supply in Germany and throughout the world.

Top-flight international technical programme
EuroTier 2010 has a top-flight international technical programme for visitors. The objective is to create an additional information platform for international top decision-makers from the field of practice, giving them an opportunity for intensive exchanges of opinion and experience. Offerings include the EuroTier Pig Event, the EuroTier Dairy Event and the Poultry Event held on the eve of the exhibition opening on 15 November 2010, an Eastern European Conference being held on 17 November on the effects of the new Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and the Second Chinese-European Pig Summit, also scheduled for 17 November. At the daily Forums being held separately for each of the main animal species, experts from the fields of science and research, advisory services and consultancy, industry and practical farming will present information about current trends and major developments in interesting topics engaging the attention of the industry.

Aquaculture is firmly established at EuroTier
Aquaculture is now firmly established at EuroTier. It will once again be the focus of interest for many expert visitors from Germany and the rest of the world. Leading suppliers of technology and equipment as well as many other providers and institutions from the fields of aquaculture, mariculture, inland fisheries and environmental engineering are represented. Biomass from water and exploitation of substance cycles are the thematic forward-looking areas at EuroTier 2010. This is where the latest developments will be presented, including for the first time new ways of breeding and using algae.

Strong run on Young Farmers Day
Young DLG expects around 5,000 participants at the Young Farmers Day on 18 November 2010. It will open with a forum event on professional training in the poultry segment, as well as job forums on animal nutrition, husbandry technology and animal health. The highlight will be a congress of young animal farmers, at which perspectives in the poultry, dairy cattle and pig sectors as well as bioenergy production will be discussed, starting at 17.00 h. In the evening the Young Farmers Party will be held with support from EuroTier exhibitors.

High numbers of visitors expected

The high demand and need for information to set the course for the future and the numbers of advanced ticket sales all indicate a high level of visitor interest from Germany and abroad. In today's situation no forward-looking animal farmer should miss this excellent programme of information. That is why EuroTier 2010 will be the expected magnetic draw for the expert public. DLG expects 120,000 visitors.
