MEPs visit young farmer’s agri-businesses with CEJA

CEJA organised farm visits today for MEPs from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in Belgium and France. The purpose of the visit was to show MEPs a real, from the ground perspective of Europe’s young agri-entrepeneurs.

The three farms were chosen “as examples of modern, multifunctional and innovative agri-businesses that are using new techniques and measures to keep up to date with the environmental, economic and social demands that young farmers have to meet”, according to CEJA President Joris Baecke.

MEP Richard Ashworth commenting after the days visit maintained that “the most important thing for young people in the sector is that they get a return on their investments. Young farmers are vital to to the future of agriculture and Europe.” Reflecting on the situation of young farmers in the United Kingdom, MEP Ashworth stated that “it's significant that only 4% of agricultural holders are below 35 years old. This figure is very low and indicates we do have a problem for the future.”

The farms

1) Bio-methanisation for electricity production
Young farmer: Dimitri Burniaux, Surice, Belgium
Details: In addition to the farming activities (sugar beets, wheat, barley) there is also a bio-methanisation station which produces electricity to sell to the national grid and circulate heat to ten houses nearby and the farm itself.

 2) Improve farming practices to best preserve the environment and contribute to bio-diversity
Young farmer: Christophe Honoré, Etroungt, France
Details: Dairy farm of 110 hectares. Project to become self-sufficient for animal feed, through diversification of cultures. 80 hectares are dedicated to grassland, 23 hectares for corn, 3 hectares for beet and 4 hectares for mix of protein crops. The diversification of cultures makes it possible to feed the cows independently all year round with a balanced diet rich in protein.
