Monthly Machinery Retail Sales: May '06

Preliminary May 2006 Retail Sales for Tractors and Combines, issued by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) indicated a downturn in sales of the larger 4-wheel drive tractors. Compared to a year ago.

U.S. 2-wheel drive farm tractor sales in May 2006 totaled 25,316, up 4.7% from sales in May 2005. Year-to-date sales are about 2% higher, when compared to the first five months of 2005. U.S. 4-wheel drive tractor sales in May 2006 totaled 247, down 8.2% from sales for May 2005. Year-to-date totals for the first five months are off 15% from the same months in 2005.

U.S. May self-propelled combine sales totaled 424, up 5.5% from sales in May 2005. Year-to-date sales are only 2% better than the first five months a year ago.

Based on 5-year averages, total unit sales for all tractor sizes and comines tend to remain relatively flat in January and February before rising in March to peak in April. The peak this year appears to have come in April.
