Artificial rain sought for forest fire in China

FIREFIGHTERS in the Greater Hinggan Mountains in northeast China are preparing to make artificial rain to help tame a forest fire that has raged for 10 days.

The local meteorological bureau said yesterday they have mounted rocket shells on 11 vehicles at Kanduhe Forest Farm.

Officials with the bureau said favorable weather for making artificial rain is expected from today to Sunday. An attempt to make artificial rain last Friday produce only 1 millimeter of rain, and failed to curb the fire.

A lightning strike started the fire on May 22 in the country's largest virgin forest and it has engulfed an estimated 50,000 hectares of forest.

Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said on Wednesday that more firemen and airplanes were needed to extinguish all forest fires in China.

The forest fire in Galashan area of Heihe City, Heilongjiang, was put out on Wednesday morning about 10 days after lightning started the blaze on May 21.
