A significant shift from the British manufacturer's usual output of agricultural, construction and groundscare kit, this latest project is being viewed as an opportunity to boost the profile of the company's home-grown engines which were launched two years ago. Using a car developed with racing specialists Visioneering and Ricardo, JCB hopes to beat the current record which was set in 1973 and stands at 235.8mph.
To do this a team will fly out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA in August this year. The JCB DieselMax will be driven by Wing Commander Andy Green who, with the jet-powered Thrust SSC car, set the first ever supersonic world land speed record of 763mph in 1997. He hopes to reach a more sedate 300mph with JCB's diesel-driven attempt this summer.
