EURES.EUROPA.EU a new web address to fill 1 million job vacancies

With the launch of the new Europa web address on Europe Day (9 May), EURES, the European Jobs mobility portal, will also change its web address t eures.europa.eu. The new EURES portal offers free access to about 1 million job vacancies in 30 European countries. With over 900,000 unique visitors per month during February and March, EURES has also become the most visited site managed by the European Commission.

The new EURES address enables direct access in 20 EU languages to all job vacancies published by 30 public employment services in Europe. Commenting on the change of address, Vladimr pidla, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs said: "In a few months, the use of EURES has nearly doubled, from 500,000 to 900,000 visitors per month. The recent connection of several countries illustrates it is an essential tool supporting our Growth and Jobs Strategy".

The portal offers comprehensive and up to date information on living and working conditions in Europe in all EU languages. People can post their CVs free of charge, and employers can find suitable candidates. Over 102,000 CVs are already hosted on the portal, and over 5,500 employers registered.

Around 11% of EURES users come from Poland, followed by France, Germany and Italy. More than 20% of enquiries are made in English, followed by Polish (8.5 %), German (7%), Spanish (5.5 %) and French (5%). The country of destination with the highest number of applications is the UK, followed by France, Germany, Ireland and Spain. Hotel, catering and personal services is the most popular occupational sector followed by computing and engineering and teaching professionals.

EURES plays a major role in the 2006 European Year of Workers' mobility (EYWM). The objectives of the Year are to increase the awareness of the public about the rights, instruments and opportunities of workers' mobility; to exchange examples of good practice; and to develop the knowledge basis about mobility patterns in the EU, in both geographic and occupational terms. The Year also aims to increase attention for the removal of obstacles to mobility and the means to enhance mobility as a tool to develop a genuine labour market for workers in Europe.
