French retailing giant Carrefour's sales in China rose 24.9% last year to 17.55 billion yuan-update


French retailing giant Carrefour's sales in China rose 24.9 percent last year to 17.55 billion yuan, ranking ninth among the country's top 30 retail chains, according to figures released by the Ministry of Commerce.

Carrefour's stores in China rose to 78 last year from 62 a year earlier, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website. Shanghai Brilliance Group Co Ltd, parent of listed Bailian Group Co Ltd, remains the largest chain-store operator in China, with its sales up 7.2 percent to 72.07 billion yuan.

Sales of GOME Electrical Appliances Holdings Ltd were up 108.7 percent from the previous year at 49.84 billion yuan, ranking second on the top 30 list. Sales of Suning Appliance Chain Store Group Co Ltd rose 30.5 percent to 30.18 billion yuan, ranking third on the list.

Sales of METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry Co, a joint venture between Germany's Metro and state-backed Jinjiang Group, were up 18.6 percent at 7.55 billion yuan, Ministry of Commerce said. METRO operated 27 stores as of the end of 2005, unchanged from the previous year.
