Ghent (Belgium) Volvo plant announces record

The plant of Swedish carmaker Volvo in Ghent (East Flanders) produced a record number of cars last year.

The Volvo car assembly plant in Oostakker near Ghent manufactured nearly 260,000 cars in 2005. This is a record for the Ghent plant. The number is also 5% up compared to 2004.

Volvo Gent employs some 5,000 people currently, although there have been employment cuts recently. 300 people who left the factory, have not been replaced.

In the autumn, Volvo Gent is to assemble a new model, the compact C30.
