Malaysian animal breeders face prosecution for defying FMD rules
Animal breeders in Malaysia could face prosecution if they do not comply with the control measures outlined by the Veterinary Services Department to prevent an outbreak of FMD.
According to Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin breeders who ignore the regulations and allow foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) to spread could be prosecuted under the Veterinary Ordinance 1953 and could be fined a minimum of RM200 per animal or six months jail or both.
The aim of the new measures are to ensure that by the year 2009, Malaysia would be free from the threat of any FMD outbreak.
