Something new from Belgium: confectionery for diabetics and peach beer (Grne Woche)

Draught peach beer, Ardennes hams and exquisite amaretto, nougat and cherry confectionery as a dessert: at the 71st Green Week the Belgian stands are again presenting numerous new and delicious items.

On the Bierlinie stand in Hall 18 Johan Pille is selling Lamic peach beer for the first time, which is produced by the spontaneous action of a self-fermenting type of wheat, which is only found in Belgium around the Senne valley.

Draught Trappist beer is also very popular, and this may only be brewed by monks belonging to the Cistercian order. The Dubbel has a malty, chocolaty note, the Tripel has notes of coriander, thyme and rosemary.

It is an ideal accompaniment to Ardennes ham, which is smoked for several months. Felix Montenauer from the ham smokehouse of the same name in the High Ardennes says the product has been selling very well here for the past 14 years.

Each year new kinds of confectionery are created and offered at the Green Week: this year Joachim Grossmann has added cherry-marzipan and roasted almonds in a nougat creme to his product range. We are noticing a growing demand for confectionery for diabetics he says. He is presenting ten varieties at the fair, which have been sweetened using maltite. Grossmann claims that they taste just the same as the normal varieties.
