Annemie Neyts leads the European Liberal Democrats


Belgium's Annemie Neyts has been elected as the new president of the European Liberal Democrat Party (ELDR). Neyts earlier served as Belgian Secretary of State for Europe and has spent some considerable time in the European Parliament.

Ms. Neyts (61) was elected at the European Liberal Democrats' conference in Bratislava (Slovakia). She had to see off competition from the former Dutch Foreign Minister Jozias van Aartsen.

Annemie Neyts is a former leader of the Flemish liberal party VLD. She also served in the Belgian federal government and the Brussels regional government. She is currently a member of the European Parliament.

Four Vice-Presidents were also elected during the ELDR Congress.

- M. Markus L�ning, MP (FDP, Germany), 

- Mrs. Katar�na Glonč�kov� � Golev, ANO Deputy Chairperson responsible for Foreign Affairs (ANO, Slovakia)

- Mr. Wilfried Derksen, member of the Supervisory Council of the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD), (D66, Netherlands)

- Bas Eenhoorn (VVD, The Netherlands) was elected ELDR party treasurer.
