Too much added sugar in our food

Our food contains too much sugar according to the Flemish consumer watchdog "Test-Aankoop". New European research into various readily available food products shows that even "healthy" options contain higher than expected sugar levels.

The high sugar level in snacks and soft drinks is already a well known and accepted fact. Few expect however, the amount of added sugar in so-called "healthy" products to be excessive.

According to Yvo Mechels from Test-Aankoop, consumers are misled into believing that such products as breakfast cereals, yoghurts and even savoury products such as tomato ketchup contain little or no sugars.

Speaking on public radio, Mr Mechels was keen to point out that a single portion of breakfast cereal, or a yoghurt drink, can easily contain up to the equivalent of two sugar lumps in added sugar.

Clear and accurate labelling

The consumer watchdog organisation is calling for manufacturers to better label their products, clearly indicating the amount of added sugar.

A recent National Health Survey illustrated a direct link between the amount of sugar consumed and problems of obesity and general over weight in both children and adults.

Besides improved and clearer labelling of food products, Test-Aankoop believe that both the government and the industry itself should make a greater effort to drastically reduce the amount of added sugar in food products.
