Seafood exporters and delegates from Japan, China, Vietnam, the US, Norway and other European countries are expected to attend the three-day international exhibition, organised by the Centres Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) next month.
West Bengal exported 18,605 metric tonnes of seafood, including black tiger prawns and crabs worth around Rs 525 crore, in the last financial year 2004-05, said Mr Vimal Kumar, MPEDA deputy director, a Central government authority under the ministry of Commerce in Cochin.
He added that owners of fisheries from the length and breadth of Indias coasts are expected to participate in this buyers-and-sellers meet, along with exporters from across India.
A wide range of seafood from all states will be displayed, as well as modern machinery related to seafood processing. Marine ornamental fishes will add colour to the show.
In the Seafood Show, West Bengal will have better opportunity to showcase the states black tiger prawn, scampi, lobster and live crabs, which are in great demand in the international market, said Mr Taj Mohammed, SEAI vice president. The show, which is held every two years, will take place at the Netaji Indoor Stadium from 3 to 5 February.
