Commission clears acquisition of Fyffes by Sumitomo

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of Fyffes of Ireland by Sumitomo of Japan.

Fyffes is active in the production, procurement, distribution and marketing of fresh fruits and mushrooms. Fyffes also provides ripening services to third parties. Sumitomo is active in a wide range of sectors, including the production, procurement and distribution of vegetable and fresh fruits through its subsidiary Sumifru. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns because the companies' activities do not overlap in the European Economic Area. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

More information will be available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.8344.
