Commission approves joint venture between Bekaert and OTPP in wire ropes

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the creation of a joint venture to operate under the name of Bridon Bekaert Ropes by NV Bekaert SA of Belgium and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board (OTPP) of Canada. Bekaert is active worldwide in steel wire transformation and coatings, and will mainly contribute its wire rope activities to the joint venture.

OTPP is a pension fund for teachers in the Canadian province of Ontario. OTPP has investments in a variety of companies worldwide, including Bridon International Ltd, a UK company active in the production and sale of wire ropes for various applications.

The Commission concluded that the proposed transaction would raise no competition concerns because several alternative suppliers would remain active after the merger in the markets for wire ropes and rope wire.

The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure.

More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.7904.
