Copa and Cogeca urge EU Commission and governments to step up action
Copa and Cogeca urged today the EU Commission and national governments to step up action and improve coordination between the authorities to prevent the spread of the disease Xylella fastidiosa after a second case was confirmed in France.

Copa-Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen warned “Even though the link between the cases in Italy and in France have not yet been confirmed, Xylella fastidiosa poses a very serious threat to olive oil production in southern Europe, as it kills the infected trees. With the warm weather and tourist season now in full swing, it’s crucial to improve coordination between the authorities and inform travelers of the risk of spreading the deadly bacteria in southern countries. It can be spread via flying insects which can then be carried on peoples clothing for example and plants”.
He continued: “Olive oil has many health benefits and its production in Southern Europe is of paramount importance, as it provides a key source of employment. Not only to olive producers but also to the entire production chain, including cooperative and private mills, tourism and marketing activities. EU stakeholders, Member States authorities, consumers and travelers all around the world are key components of a preventative policy. Everyone consequently has a role to play to keep Europe free of pests”.
