FFAC - defining the future of feed flavourings in Europe

The re-authorisations of feed flavourings (more than 800 additives) are managed by the companies involved in the FEFANA Feed Flavouring Authorisation Consortium (FFAC).

While EFSA has delivered safety assessments for more than half of the 592 chemically defined feed flavourings (268 botanical extracts not being reviewed yet), FFAC is working at fulfilling the data gaps highlighted by EFSA and is preparing the forthcoming terms of approvals for feed flavourings. Therefore, the role played by FFAC in the re-authorisation procedures provides a unique insight into the flavouring products characterisation and allows all FFAC Members to properly influence and anticipate the future of feed flavouring authorisations.

Likewise, FFAC has started a constructive dialog with EFSA and the European Commission on the occasion of an Info Session (May 6, 2015 - Barcelona) where stakeholders had the opportunity to share respective concerns on the assessments and consider a practical path towards re-authorisations. Priceless information on further work needed and expectations from the EU competent authorities were collected on the occasion. Many more additional studies than initially planned by the consortium will have to be submitted.

FFAC is currently considering shortening the list of substances and target species to be defended in order to balance the related high costs of the studies. Hence, substances not considered essential to FFAC Members will be withdrawn from the FFAC re-authorisation project and potentially valuable compounds will disappear from the market.

Therefore, FFAC welcomes all feed operators involved in the market of feed flavourings to join and support the re-authorisation of these additives. Joining the consortium allows to share registration expenses, offers access to latest available technical and safety information, enables to pro-actively defend the marketing of additives and allows anticipating upcoming Regulations.
If you are interested in this project, please do not hesitate to join the open meeting which will take place on September 22, 2015 in Brussels. If you would like to receive further information on the event, please send an e-mail to eeig.additives@fefana.org.
