Starting signal given for building of SESVanderHave’s R&D complex

Construction work has begun on SESVanderHave’s new R&D research centre. The global leader in research on and the production of sugar beet seed is investing more than €10 million in a hi-tech complex consisting of laboratories, greenhouses and offices. The R&D centre is being built on the Feed Food Health part of premises at the industrial park in Tienen just a stone’s throw away from SESVanderHave’s current headquarters.

With the new research centre, SESVanderHave will be able to double its R&D capacity. Thousands of sugar beet plants will be grown under optimal conditions without being affected by the weather outside. “This will allow us to coordinate and interpret our research much more effectively”, says CEO Rob van Tetering. “This is of the utmost importance for SESVanderHave because it is only by carrying out more tests with greater precision that we are able to bring better sugar beet varieties onto the market more quickly. And this can only benefit the growers and the sugar industry.”

The approval of the environmental licence happened very quickly thanks to the strong dossier that SESVanderHave was able to submit to the authorities. The environmental advisory board was persuaded by, amongst other things, the added value that the research centre will offer to the regional economy thanks to the ecological character of the complex.
Rob van Tetering: “The smooth collaboration with the Tienen municipal authorities and the Flemish Brabant Provincial Development Agency – which coordinates the plans of the FFH site – is a sign of confidence in our project. The next few weeks will see a great deal of activity here on our site, even during the construction industry holidays. We aim to be using a significant portion of our greenhouses by the autumn.” The fully finished complex will be ready in 2016.
