Biotech Day offers a view on the therapies of tomorrow
This Sunday, 19 October, life sciences research institute VIB is hosting the fourth edition of Biotech Day at Ghent University’s Technology Park in Zwijnaarde. All ages are catered to during the interactive day, which introduces the public to the multifaceted field of biotechnology, which uses living organisms to create medical therapies, and Flanders’ role in the development of the therapies of the future.

The themes this year are inflammatory diseases and immunity. Visitors will learn about how the Flemish biotech sector searches for solutions to allergies, asthma, flu, multiple sclerosis and HIV.
“Inflammatory diseases are an increasing problem in public health,” stated professor Bart Lambrecht, director of VIB’s Inflammation Research Centre at Ghent University. “We expect that one-third of all expenses for health care will be based on inflammatory diseases. To stop this phenomenon, we need to better understand better how they originate and remain. ”
During Biotech Day, the Inflammation Research Centre will provide guided tours and workshops for children around asthma and viruses. Biotechnology firm Ablynx is one of the companies that offers visitors a rare peek behind the scenes in their high tech laboratories. Journalist Joël De Ceulaer will talk with a variety of specialists about the focus of research within the Flemish biotech sector.
