PotatoEurope 2014 – Impetus and driving force for the potato sector

Germany’s potato industry organization, “Union der Deutschen Kartoffelwirtschaft” (UNIKA), expects PotatoEurope 2014 to provide fresh impetus for the domestic and international potato sector. The potato industry will be on show to the public on 3 and 4 September 2014. Following the premiere in 2006 and the repeat performance of the leading international trade fair for the potato sector in Germany in 2010, PotatoEurope is being held at the Bockerode Estate near Hanover for the third time this year.

UNIKA, as initiator and sponsor of this exhibition, is presenting a lively market and showcase of the potato value chain on the joint stand of the German potato industry.

“The PotatoEurope success stories from the years 2006 and 2010 inspire us to continue the good work and make 2014 even better, more informative and more eventful”, says Martin Umhau, Chairman of the Board of UNIKA. “This is the first time it has been possible to bring representatives of the German potato industry together on a joint stand. This central meeting point in the tent hall highlights the major importance and significance of Germany’s potato industry. With pooled information on all links in the value chain, UNIKA as a common platform will be the contact for all spheres at the event”, adds Umhau.

The concerns and the demands of our society go hand in hand with changes in consumer behaviour patterns. What trends will yield market opportunities in the long term and what will tomorrow's solutions look like? What process and product innovations will carry the industry into the future and what technical innovations will become standard in order to make full use of potentials? “Answers to these and many other topical questions are expected at PotatoEurope”, sums up the UNIKA Chairman. “From the classic heart of the event, machinery demonstrations, to practically viable, optimized potential solutions for storage logistics and crate handling, and to the market opportunities and risks that will be discussed at a lecture event, PotatoEurope offers answers to all and any questions concerning the potato value chain” stresses Martin Umhau.

UNIKA – Platform for the potato industry
UNIKA brings together all the individual stages in the potato sector. Members include potato breeders, farm producers, traders, packers and processors, as well as the corresponding suppliers of machinery and equipment, farm inputs and resources, all aiming to advance the potato industry together. UNIKA’s objective is to boost the competitiveness of Germany’s potato sector. It creates a common basis for this across interest groups and individual associations. A large number of highly qualified honorary specialists from all parts of the potato sector play a role in the various UNIKA committees and panels.

The four firmly established Expert Commissions for the fields of planting material, phytosanitary matters, quality assurance and trading issues, and machinery and equipment for the potato industry represent a key mainstay of UNIKA. These central bodies develop technically and scientifically sound solution approaches and make them accessible for practical work in the potato sector. “The spectrum of topics addressed by the UNIKA Expert Commissions ranges, for example, from the EU seed potato standards and EU plant health legislation to further development of the quality assurance scheme “QS Fachgesellschaft Obst, Gemüse, Kartoffeln GmbH”. The UNIKA expert knowledge pamphlets, developed jointly with acknowledged experts and compiled in a clearly structured format have proved to be important guides for the sector. UNIKA is currently positioned to draw up a guideline of the Julius Kühn-Institut in connection with harvester cleaning and elimination of residual earth”, explains UNIKA Board Chairman Martin Umhau, indicating a further project for an expert knowledge pamphlet on topical issues. UNIKA will use PotatoEurope to present the range of services offered by the organization and the value chain at the international trade fair for potato professionals.
