Organic week in Belgium

This week is organic week in Belgium. The organic sector is welcoming everyone, with organic farms staging open days and organic fairs being held across the country.

The organic sector is doing well, as organic food is slowly but surely gaining ground on the Belgian food market.

This is reflected in the number of activities, which is up on last year.

This week, the organic sector is offering visitors the chance to taste vegetables, cheese, fruit, meat or bread which tastes "as it should".

More and more people buy organic food products because they are healthier and have more taste.

Waiting for breakthrough

Still, the organic food and farming sector keeps waiting for the big breakthrough, bio products totalling a mere 1.4% of all food consumption in Belgium.

The sector is taking its first steps towards adopting a professional structure.

Many farmers are still hesitating to make the switch to organic produce, as it's very labour-intensive.

They also fear that the organic market is too small, but research has shown that their fear is unjustified.

Until 11 June

Marianne Vergeylen, the organiser of the organic week, hopes that the event will boost consumption.

"Farmers are bound to step up production when consumption goes up," she says.

The organic week still runs until 11 June.
